Well... you know how frustrated I was at the onset of this piece. It finally found its direction. It really was intimidating to try and tackle these two, having been weaned in this fandom on your interpretations and Eresse's-- the bar was set mightily high, and it was daunting. I was originally considering coming up with a Legolas/Haldir story, but that seemed just too predictable coming from me, and every time I thought about it, I just kept seeing Elrohir's infinitely sympathetic face and I knew that this was going to be their story, like it or not. I wanted Elrohir to be a bit of a foil to Legolas' angst/ennui, but in the gentlest and most empathetic way.
As I told Min, It was really important for me for the relationships to feel honest and natural... This was both particularly true and particularly tricky with Thranduil, because he only gets a cameo in the text, but his presence is so heavily felt throughout. I was aiming for a pervasive feeling of absent friends/present ghosts, and wanted both Elrohir and Legolas to be reacting as much to what they were *not* experiencing (or what they were missing...or what they felt they had lost...) as to what they *were* experiencing. I don't think I've elucidated that very well, but I think you know what I'm getting at. The key word for me while writing this piece was Chiaroscuro-- both in the literal and figurative sense.
I have much more to say about Legolas, specifically pertaining to I-E, but I will save that for email. The latest chapter is nearing completion, and hopefully I will be back on track with it soon.
